Okay, so I know this is early, but I've been thinking about this...

Do you give out the typical candy or do you do something different?

We used to always laugh at my mom bc she gave out pencils...she always said the kids ended up with enough candy...now as I have gotten older, I see more of her point, especially with childhood obesity as it is.

I'm a Halloween scrooge-- we don't give out candy. Between taking the kids out for trick or treating and living in a gated community with no kids coming to our house anyway, it's just not something we're able to do. I would love to do it in the future though. I like Halloween. What other opportunity do you have to beg people for candy and they happily give it away? It's such an odd tradition but I love it.

We're never home to give out candy, either. I'm so looking forward to this year because I'm going to dress the boys with coordinating costumes (not matching, but a theme). I'm so excited about it!!!
And I think the "something other than candy" idea is a good one!

We don't have any random kids that come by since we live so far out in the country. I will probably just buy enough candy and other stuff to make up treat bags for our nieces and nephews and a couple of DH's smaller cousins to give them when we see them around Halloween (probably not actually ON Halloween since, as mentioned we live WAY out and I doubt anyone will make the trek).

I have done Halloween candy in the past, and I've also had years where we turned the lights off and pretended not to be home. I kind of like giving stuff to trick or treaters. I would love it if people weren't so scared about homemade treats, because I could make some killer goodies for much cheaper than "Halloween Candy". Alas, not so much.

And, shhhhhh, but I secretly stash HalloCandy when it's 75% off and use it in xmas stockings. Muahaha.

"Um, Mandi, why is the xmas stocking candy orange and black?!"
"Hmmm, couldn't tell ya."

Definition (Webster's 2006) of "MandiK":
A 20something, graduate student, college prof, tree hugging, time managing, coupon addicted, cosmetic selling, dirt worshipping, girl who is in love with Ben and welcomed Sofie Grace on 1/31/11.

I'm bad, but I give out tons of candy. Growing up, we lived in an area where we NEVER got tot'ers, so I always thought, "when I grow up, I'm going to live in a real community so I can actually give kids candy."

What was I thinking? I spend a fortune on halloween candy! I give the good stuff: reese's, hershey's mini's, snickers mini's, stuff like that that I'd be happy to have.

We go out with the kids, and we leave a bowl on the porch with a note that says, "we're out having our own halloween fun. Please be honest and take only one." It's so corny, but hey... it works.

One year I gave out Wendy's frosty coupons. They are the really small ones and a pack of 10 was only a $1. The kids that I gave them to were so excited. I had to tell them what they were but when I did they loved it. I could hear them running back to their mom's going "I got a free frosty!" I imagine a lot of moms were begged to visit Wendy's that night. And I didn't mind using up all of the leftovers.
