So, exactly one week ago today I was in labor. Wow, that just doesn't seem right, but I must say that I kept telling my husband that we weren't going to make it to November. Of course, he didn't believe me but I just knew. I had spent the previous 3 weeks cleaning out the refrigerator on my eating binges and I was so swollen (especially my feet). Plus, Robin was so cramped. She was stuck in one position and I could always feel her feet sticking out. I just knew.

On to the story-

Everything really started on Thursday. My husband came home from work to find me rocking back and forth and complaining about how uncomfortable I was. Then on Saturday my SIL came up to help me get our new house cleaned so DH and I could move in on Monday. Well, I helped and did more cleaning than I'd done in the past couple of months, but I had to constantly stop and sit down because my back hurt SOO bad. I remember telling my SIL that I seriously thought she'd end up taking me to the hospital. Sunday rolled around and my wonderful SIL had to leave and DH had to drive to NC and back (a 12 hour trip). I remember thinking to myself "Baby girl please don't decide to show up while Daddy's gone." I wasn't in labor but I just knew she was coming soon.

So DH gets home around 9pm. We hung out and eventually went to bed around 11. Well, I woke up at 2:30 because I had to go to the bathroom. I heaved myself out of bed and as I was walking I realized that my panties were really heavy and completely, I mean completely, soaked. So, I went to the bathroom all bright-eyed and like "No freakin way" and yes, I smelled my panties. Then I go back to the bedroom and pull the sheets back. And after I saw the huge wet spot I said "Oh my God". Then I woke up my husband kind of frantically and he asked if I was okay. I said "Look". I pulled back the covers and he asked if my water broke. I told him I thought so but wasn't sure and that amniotic fluid is supposed to have a sweet smell. I was still trying to convince myself that I'd peed in the bed. I asked him to smell my panties because my nose was so stuffy and he did. LOL. He loves telling that part of the story. Well there was no smell but at this point my DH hits freak out mode and doesn't know what to do with himself. He asked me if we should call 911. I told him to calm down and that we needed to pack our bag. I sent him to Google our hospital's website because they have a list of everything we should bring. Okay, bag gets packed and I start crying because we hadn't lined up anyone to take care of our dogs yet and because I'm scared. Duh. DH hugs me and says "It's gonna be okay. You're gonna have our baby today." Then he dresses me. I didn't even bother with trying to clean up or look decent because the fluid just kept leaking in little gushes.

Once we're in the car I called my SIL and yes, my mother (I figured she'd want to be there for the birth of her first grandchild and she had to drive 6 hours to get there). We get to the hospital a little after 3 because DH drove like a madman. I walk into L&D and tell the receptionist why I'm there and she hands me paperwork to fill out. Yay! Paperwork! DH is annoyed by this so he fills it out for me and then we sit and wait for someone to take us back. Finally, we go back and I give the customary urine sample. Let me tell ya, that was difficult. I change into that sexy lingerie they call a gown and then chill on the bed in the triage room. Then they send in this very shy, timid med student to ask me 10,000 questions that I'm sure no one else will hear about. I was in no mood for this so I was kind of rude but I answered them. Oh well. Then the real doctors come in to check/inspect my vagina for the first of many times, and they verify that yes, indeed my water did break. They didn't even bother testing the fluid because it was obvious. At that point they said I was dilated to 2cm, 80% effaced and -3 station. Another doctor comes in and starts talking about Pitocin with the other doctors in the room and I tried to ask her a question to which she did not respond. So I look at my husband and say "Gosh I love when people just talk about me like I'm not even here and like I'm just another number." So then she speaks TO me and tells me they want to start Pitocin and I asked her if there was some way they could wait and see if labor starts on its on. She says no that there's a small window to work with since my water broke before the issue of infection to the baby. Whatever. They weren't gonna budge on the issue so I said fine. Then as I'm getting my IV I get stuck twice because the first nurse causes my vein to collapse as he's trying to insert the IV. The second nurse gets it in no time, thank goodness because the first one hurt!

Then they move me to the labor and birthing room where I meet the nurse who will be with me til shift change at 6:45. At that point it was about 4am. The male nurse from triage who escorted us there tells me that the new nurse has been doing her job for forever and that she's really good at it. So, I get the hint he's throwing out and I ask him if she's a b*tch. He said no but she's very businesslike. Great. Well, I hated her in the beginning. Man, she was not friendly or comforting whatsoever. At that point I'd had a couple of contractions on my own and they weren't anything to write home about. So, my nurse starts up the Pitocin at a 2 (I'm not sure what kind of measurement that is but I know they run from 1 to 10). Well, I got hit with a contraction that felt like a Mac truck. It lasted for 3 minutes! I didn't even get properly introduced to the beast known as Pitocin. So I'm breathing and writhing in agony and poor DH has no idea what to do. Then the nurse comes in and says that apparently I'm very sensitive to Pitocin. Well, no sh*t! So she stops it altogether and my weak contractions come back and I'm working through them pretty easily. Eventually she turns it back on at a 1 and things start progressing.

Shift change occurs and I meet my new nurse, she told me to call her Dee and she was the angel on my shoulder. At first she angered me because she would crank up the Pitocin without telling me. Oh and did I mention that I had envisioned a natural childbirth all through my pregnancy? Yeah at this point, nothing had gone as planned. So my contraction are getting stronger and stronger and DH is trying his hardest to keep me focused and relaxed. Unfortunately, he just wasn't prepared to deal with me like this (with the Pitocin). And he was so exhausted I just felt bad for him. I kept snapping at the poor guy. I was snapping at him because the contractions were no joke at this point and so I finally decided to ask my nurse for some relief. Even though I wanted to go natural, I hadn't completely ruled out the drugs because I knew things don't always go the way you want them to. So the nurse gave me some Nubane. I had an immediate sensation of euphoria and the pain wasn't so bad at the moment. At this point my SIL arrived. I'm sure DH let out a sigh of relief. She was a great person to have around during the contractions and her presence allowed DH an opportunity to eat. I kept laboring and eventually the Nubane wore off. It's at this point that things get blurry momentarily. I can't remember if I got more Nubane at this point but I know I was hurting. And DH tried so hard to use what we learned in our childbirth class but it just wasn't working.

I had just hit 5cm when I decided that I was done with going natural. I was getting the epidural. So I hit the button to call the nurse and when she came in I remember looking at her and saying "Please help me". In no time the anesthesiologist comes in and decides that I need more Nubane just so he can give me the epidural. Well the nurse had to check with the doctor to make sure this was okay and it was. I'm not gonna lie-I was fairly doped up at this point. He got the epidural in place in no time and oh the relief! I finally got an opportunity to get some much needed rest and life was good. However, I did need oxygen for the rest of the time and I had to stay on my left side because Robin's heartrate would go down if I were on my right side. My husband had stepped out of the room when they gave me the oxygen mask. So you can imagine his concern when he came back to find his wife wearing an oxygen mask.

My mom arrived shortly after and I made her the official "ice chip lady". Her job was to feed me. Since I was feeling so much better, we all sat around and joked til a doctor came in and checked me. Then pure excitement on my part. I was at 10cm, 100% effaced and at +3 station. It was time to meet my little girl. It was around 2:15pm at this point. So the doctor leaves and Dee and another med student (who was awesome) are there to work with me through some pushing. My SIL left because she had her son with her and didn't want his little toddler eyes to witness this. I said that was probably a good idea. During the pushing DH started off holding one of my legs and the med student held the other one and my mom was at my head. I was so numb at that point that pushing was a little difficult but we worked through it with Dee coaching me the entire time. I really can't convey how awesome she was. I was blessed to have her as my nurse. She decided that DH and I should try pushing where he holds a rolled up towel in the middle and I hold the ends. It helped me curl up more and push better. And it worked! It also allowed DH the opportunity to get the full view of our darling daughters delivery. He was absolutely fascinated. I knew he wouldn't pass out but I didn't know he would do so well.

So the funniest part of the delivery was that both DH and my mom would hold their breath and push when Dee was coaching me through a contraction. It was so bad that one contraction went like this. Dee was counting "1,2,3,4,5,6, breath mom, breath! (to my mother LOL) 7,8,9,10. And she had to keep reminding Mike, my DH, to breath as well. They were both so red in the face.

Eventually, I got to where I could feel again and then she crowned. It hurt. Not gonna lie. But it was like no pain I'd experienced. I was so excited to meet my little girl. And yes, there is such a thing as a ring of fire, but I just pushed through it and out she popped at 3:16pm. All 6lbs 1oz, 19 3/4 inches of her. Because she was 5 weeks early they had to assess her immediately, and I didn't get to hold her til after they did all that and cleaned her up. I could barely see her from where I was and she only cried a little. So I was concerned, but her Apgar scores wer 8 and 9. And I already knew that they were going to take her to the observation nursery for 24 hours but I just wanted to hold my baby!!! I did get to hold her and let me tell you. I have never felt so much love for another human being til that moment. My heart instantly melted, and I knew that I was wrapped around her little finger. Boy was it little.

Some people have tried to tell me that when she was born that I may not feel an instant connection. They were so freakin wrong. I've loved her since the moment I knew she was growing inside me, and that never changed once she came out. It only got stronger and hasn't stopped multiplying.

Even though nothing went as planned, she was born after 13 hours of labor (not too bad IMO) and everything went smoothly for the most part.

Me just before pushing. Yeah I looked rough.

Robin during her assessment

Yes she got a conehead (it took a while to get that noggin out) and it went away pretty quickly

My Golden Retriever gave her one good sniff and after that he could care less. My Min. Schnauzer, Lucy, on the other hand, is having a little bit of a hard time coming to terms with the fact that she isn't the baby. She hasn't been aggressive in the least but I can just tell that she's unhappy with the fact that Robin has taken her spot. So I'm loving on her as much as possible and giving her more treats as well. She seems to slowly be coming around. I do feel a little guilt about spoiling Lucy as much as I have because now it's my fault that she's having a little bit of a hard time.
