After-school activities
What is everyone into this fall?

H is playing baritone horn and in a church class. Wants to get back into karate and so does S, but I don't know where I would find the time. S does library time occasionally but that is all for him.

Re: After-school activities
Ani is an a magnet that requires a bit of outside time so she has creative writing for 2 classes a day and then as an extra-curricular, too. She joined her school's Model UN group as well.

Cameron and Ani both have church activities one night a week. Ani has classes at church every morning at 6 am as well.

The little guys don't have anything during the week because, honestly, that would just be way too much. Between everything we have to do because Ani's in high school and goes to a school across the district and the boys having to go to bed early since their school starts at 7:40 which means they have to get up by 6:30, there just isn't time.

Lucy does chorus, orchestra and dance. She dance 7 days a week for a total of 14 hours.

Noah does basketball but that's on Saturday. He wants to do karate so we're looking in to that.

Re: After-school activities
Ohhhh - you'll be sorry you asked me.

Erin is in Math League and involved in band and choir. Now on top of that she swim six days a week for 2.5 hours. Yes, that's correct FIFTEEN hours a week spent in a swimming pool.

Andrew is in helping hands (after school mentoring), chess club, Odyssey of the Mind, and Lego Robotics club. And he's playing fall ball with practice twice a week and games every Saturday. He's plays trumpet too but that's not after school. Thank goodness.

Shane doesn't have any after school clubs yet but he is playing fall ball and has practice two nights a week and games every Saturday.

Kelsey is at college - but she's not far enough away that we don't go to her stuff to support her too. She's only an hour away. Last weekend her swim team did a triathlon and Erin and I went down to support her. Her swimming starts October 28th with the first meet.

Scheduling is a nightmare. Usually my dh and I divide and conquer. He is getting ready to go on night shift for four weeks. I don't know how we will get to all the things they do. :(

Re: After-school activities
Not much. We homeschool, so "after" school actually means "during" school for some of our activities. For sports, Ben's in bowling league & scouts, and Daniel's in gymnastics. Aside from that, they have church classes twice a week, a weekly park day for gifted homeschoolers (which is just now starting up... we haven't met anyone yet), and a monthly park day for deaf/HOH kids.

If we ever feel like we're running thin, we'll cut out an activity. I don't like seeing kids so over-scheduled that their parents go bald and the school work isn't finished. I didn't have any activities until I was in high school, and that was just musicals and a job. Today's kids blow my mind sometimes. :(

Re: After-school activities
Chrystal - in my case it's not the kids that are over scheduled. It's just the kids outnumber the parents and there aren't enough drivers to get them anywhere. :D

Re: After-school activities
LOL!! I know! How soon until Erin starts driving?

Re: After-school activities
Ummmm...three years until license. Four to driving alone by state rules. My rules are usually longer. :D

Re: After-school activities
Whoa! I can't relate to this. I only have 1 child, but I think I could use everybody's advises here for the future. We are not yet ready to have another child. Maybe soon...

I find it odd that post appears 6 months after the thread orginated and this person makes a minor change to my line and posts it. What are the odds that her daughter actually dances 7 days a week for 14 hours too. Also this is the only post on the site by this person.

Re: After-school activities
You may try board games, they develop the attention and focus of the child. By the way, my daughter aks me to find dancing club for her. However, I understand that it will take all her free time. Should I allow her?

Re: After-school activities
Your dd can dance as much or as little as you want. She will most likely start with a one hour class per week.
