I'm working on getting a group of women together to change some of the regulations in my state, and let me tell you, I NEVER knew how involved it is! The women who have championed midwifery licensure and homebirth bills into laws are my new heros! :bluecheer:

I'm ashamed to admit it, but as a client, and even as an apprentice, I was not political at all. I always thought that I'd finish my training, start my practice and "just" be a midwife. Now I'm finding that I need to be a lobbyist, a PR person, a networking coordinator, and an event planner. I'm so far out of my comfort zone!!

So, this leads me to my question: what do you do to champion homebirth in your area? Have you asked your midwife if there's anything you can do to help further midwifery in your state? A lot of times sending a birth announcement or handwritten note to your legislator is all it takes to get them thinking about "those crazy homebirth people."

If you have done anything, I want to know what it is, because I'm stocking my arsenal with ideas right now!!

Let's just say I'll be taking notes!

Michigan is a pretty good homebirth state...its alegal here...not legal or illegal. There was discussion of getting insurance to pay for homebirths, but then concern for the regulations that would be imposed. I know of one homebirth/birthcenter MW in MI who does get paid for a small portion of her fees from insurance co.'s...but she is a CPNM. The DEM's are staright cash payment...no insurance will cover anything.

Until recently I'd never even seriously considered the option of home birthing. I'd always wondered about it, but never pursued the idea. I am definitely taking notes. *sits down with pen and paper ready*
