If at 37 weeks pg you found out your baby was breech, would you proceed with a homebirht if you could find a MW with any experience in it? Even if it meant switching MWs?

Yes. I had a transverse breech at 37 weeks. He flipped head down at 38 1/2 weeks. For a frank or footling breech I'd go with a midwife who had experience with breeches.

I think I'd rather have a midwife assisted birth than be referred to an OB for a c-section so it's possible I'd consider switching if I could find a willing midwife. However, my own midwife said I am an excellent candidate for a breech birth because of my pelvic size so that makes me more comfortable delivering a breech at home.

Ive got a good friend in this situation - shes a chiro, planning a homebirth, adn at 34 weeks the baby turned breech. Shes now 37 weeks- baby is frank breech.

Her MW by state law cannot deliver a breech - but were searching (and think we may have found) an "underground" MW with breech experience. We can testify to her experience, but we just happen to be one of the few licensing states, and so the MW isnt licensed (though shes practiced for 20+ yrs).

Shes nervous - but the MW shes using now has a backup OB that is pushing her to get turned manually next week & if no luck, then go with a scheduled c-section.

Im petrified for her!

I really like and trust my midwives. They do not attend breech births at home BUT do in a hospital setting. Ideally I would like to have a breech birth at home, but if that was not an option I'd be ok with having a vaginal breech birth with them at the hospital. OB and c-section would be a very last resort. I actually did have the honor of witnessing an unmedicated, non-interventive footling breech birth in a hospital-it was amazing!

My only knowledge of a breech birth is my cousin who is horribly deformed - puts the fear of god in me. Fortunately I didn't face that decision, would have to think long and hard.

I really and truly don't know what we'd do. I'd do everything I could to convince the babe to turn, probably have someone experienced try to turn it for me. After that, I guess it would depend on the midwife's experience with breech births... If there was one who had a great deal of experience (and confidence!) with them, I would consider switching to go ahead with the home birth...but wow, that's a tough one. Hard to say for sure what I'd do!

Lala, I have some underground MW numbers and I can get hold of them to get hold of you, if you would like. I think you are in my state and if you are where I think you are she is halfway between us. My father and all three of his brothers were born breech so it is something I'm comfortable with though I did have a backup midwife if M had been breech.

my midwife delivers breech. I would trust her for mine if it were me... if she decided that the type of breech was more suited to c section, Id trust her too.

we have the same midwife, and I feel exactly the same way. Although the idea of a C just horrifies me.

Lala I thought you were in IL... Now I'm wondering who it was I knew from here that was in NWIL. I can still ask around ;)
