My 3 year still uses a pacifier HELP!
Any good ideas on how to get my little man to let go of his pacifier?!?! :(
I was hoping he would get rid of it by the age of 2 but he's 3 and still uses it! Mainly to sleep or if he's home because if he's at school he won't use it at all, not even for nap time! But once he's home he won't take it off!!

HELP! Any ideas??

Theres a couple ways to do it. You can have a going away party for the paci, or you can make an agreement on when he will stop taking it. The longest so far any of my children have used one was till age 5. We made an agreement that the first day he started kindergarten he would no longer use it. and thats just how it went and he never thought twice about it.

I am not one who is against binkis though. My over 2 yr daughter and my 6 month old use one currently and Ihave now worries about it. I talked with their dentist about it and its not till they have permament teeth in that you want to really start worrying.

Is there a specific reason why you dont want him to have it? just curious thats all.

I broke Athena of the pacifier when she was 1. I just took it away and that was it. She was fussy for a couple days but after about a week she was perfectly fine without it. She used it during the day but mostly just because it was there. She only really cared about it when it was time to go to sleep though.

Re: My 3 year still uses a pacifier HELP!
Although my toddler is younger, in theory I feel like it's okay to have something they find comforting when they sleep or need to calm down. A friend kept her kid's pacifier in the crib. She could have it when she slept, but in the morning she took it out and put it down herself, in a special place she chose in her bedroom, and she knew she wouldn't get it back until bed time. (Incidentally, this made bedtime a little easier for a while because she was ready to have her pacifier.)

I've also heard of the going-away party, or setting a special day when it would go away and working up toward that day, talking it up, and having the child make a plan for how they will get rid of it.

Good luck. This is something that always seems so wrenching, on parents, too.

My daughter never took a pacifier (despite my effort to make her) but my mother-in-law told me with all 3 of her kids she slowly cut a bit off the end everyday until it was almost gone and they didn't like it anymore.

This might not help but I thought I would give you my story. My daughter never had a big attachment with a paci. She was around 5-6 months before she even liked it. I just took it away and gave her a "baby" and it only took her two days to get over it. Did the same thing with a bottle and that took her maybe 3 or 4 days to get over that. I tried doing it slowly and it wasn't working well so I tried just doing it at once. I also threw away all the paci's in the house so I wouldn't give in. Good luck!

What if you used that gross nail polish on it? It's important to stop so he doesn't end up with dental problems. Is crying it out an option? What if it got injured (maybe with scissors) and your son saw that it was broken (then it's not your fault for taking it away?)

just take it away cold turkey. He will cry for about 3 days, but its over after that. Weaning just prolongs the process and makes it harder on your child

Re: My 3 year still uses a pacifier HELP!
Try telling him that pacifiers are for kids and he's all grown up now and not a baby anymore. Or else, just snip the end of the pacifier with a pair of scissors. Then explain that it's broken and needs to be thrown away since it cannot be used anymore.
