Stray cat bit me and I am pregnant

My mom's neighbor has a stray cat that has been visiting over here for the past 2 months. I feed her when she visit. Tonight, my sister and I were petting her same time for like 15 mins and she jumped on the top of freezer. We pet her and all of a sudden she bit my hand. I immediately went to the sink and washed the bit off with soap. She is not mean.. she is very friendly and loves attention. I think she bit me cuz she may have gotten overstimulated by me and my sister petting her same time.

I'm afraid of rabies. Should I worry? sighs this never ends!

I'm looking at the hand and I don't see bite mark.. but I do see little redness on it.
I am 20 weeks pregnant.

You should be fine. If the cat had Rabies more than likely it'd be apparent. Just keep the bite clean and dry so it doesn't get infected and you should be good to go.

It would have to break the skin to pass on rabies.. Rabies is only communicable for a very brief window of time, if the cat is still alive and fine in 10 days, then your fine. Cat bites DO have a tendency to get REALLY infected though, so keep treating the area and watch for noticeable redness. You may want to talk to your Dr about it, they may want to prescribe antibiotics just to try to prevent an infection.

There hasn't been a cat that tested positive for rabies in Indiana since 1984, so rabies probably isn't a big concern..

BOAH: Rabies

I agree with Meghan and Jennifer, just make sure the area doesnt get infected. If it changes in any way, talk to you dr.

Thanks for the replies. I was tested for toxoplasmosis and is waiting for results. I do not know why doctor requested that. But anyway, all is fine with me...

Shouldn't be needed as you get that from fecal matter if the cat has eaten a rodent that was infected. But better safe than sorry I guess although even if it comes up positive you could have had it before you got pregnant if you've spent any significant amount of time around cats and cleaning litter boxes. It can be deadly to the baby if you get it while pregnant, but if you've already had it you're safe and I don't believe you can get it from a scratch. Even if you could skin would have to be broken. So I wouldn't stress yourself out about it.

Good luck!
