Cat stopped using the litterbox
Our newest cat we have had for six months refuses to use the litter box even when it's clean. The problem had been going on constantly for about a week now. He insists on finding a laundry pile or using wills room. He used to do it occasionally when something in the laundry pile had a bathroom an smell to it but now it's all the time. I caught him heading that way one day and put him in the litter box but he refused to go and waited until I had my back turned to use the laundry pile. I have no clue what to do. No changes in brand or location. I am cleaning the areas he uses regularly to eliminate the smell and put him in the litter box daily. He used to be an indoor/outdoor cat before we adopted him. He escaped from us once for a week and that is when he first started not using the box but it was only occasional. Any ideas?

Re: Cat stopped using the litterbox
Is he urinating/ deficating or both outside the litterbox? Its important to rule out medical and then jump to behavioral. If urinating outside of the litterbox - is he neutered? This also could be a result of a UTI. Bringing a urine sample to your vet will rule this out.

I'd definitely make an appointment for the vet just to make sure he doesn't have a medical condition, find out the results of that and then go from there.

Re: Cat stopped using the litterbox
He was doing both, but I finally figured out that the other cats would not always allow him access to the box, we bought a new one and are watching the other cats!

I think he was afraid of the other box. I know we should have had more to begin with.

Re: Cat stopped using the litterbox
That makes sense. They say you're supposed to have one litter box per cat. We have one box for both of our cats, but they share with no problem. However we did have a period when they were both unneutered, if the younger one was in the box when the older one went to use it, he would just drop it right on the floor. Cats can be very territorial over their potties :)

Re: Cat stopped using the litterbox
With our first two cats they shared with no problems. They act like brothers and have been together 2years now. It's looks like Boots will always be an outsider even though they do accept his presence in the house. Boots is half Siamese and behaves very much like the typical Siamese other than being quieter. He has bonded with our house mate. I am probably going to ask the housemate to take Boots with him when he moves because I have seen Siamese cats fall into a depression when abandoned by their loved one.
