Just curious if you are supposed to "clean" them somehow before they come in contact with your baby?

Put them in pillow cases and throw them into the wash on gentle cycle. I usually leave them in the cases and throw them into the dryer also (on delicate to low). 99% of the time, I use dreft since I prefer the smell but if they are really smelly, tide will work also.

I just washed them and put them in the dryer, I did normal cycle and it was fine.

I didn't wash any before Benjamin was born but he has peed or barfed on some and I just threw them in the washer with his cloths so it was baby detergent and the dryer.
