Flu shot question
The hubby and I had a discussion the other night about the flu shot. I thought it would be good idea for our parents to get the flu shot prior to meeting our baby. I didn't think it was too much to ask but my hubby thought that some people might be offended - he doesn't think his parents ever get the flu shot.

The baby will be born during peak flu season and I don't want to take any chances. We are going to talk to our doctor about it at our next visit but wanted to get some other mommy-to-be opinions.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Flu shot question
That's a very interesting question. I hadn't thought about that. It seems like a reasonable request to me unless they are very opposed to getting the shot. I'll be interested to hear other people's opinions and to hear what you decide.

Re: Flu shot question
Kelli--I am a pediatrician and think it is a GREAT idea for close relatives of baby to have the flu shot. While they are at it have them get the Tdap--the shot for pertussis (whooping cough)

The point of having the adults be vaccinated is that baby will be way too young to be vaccinated. But baby will be much more affected by one of those illnesses.

I find that most people who refuse the flu shot as adults feel that is has made them sick in the past. This is either due to coincidence (they already had the flu virus cooking and started to get symptoms) or they had a mild reaction to the body producing antibodies to the flu virus (felt tired or had a fever, but NOTHING like actual flu symptoms).

Bottom line--you are the parent. You are within your rights to make this request or limit visitation to those who are vaccinated.
