May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I've pretty much done all I can do for me until January.

But now I'm wondering what about him. I saw a supplement being recommended in another thread, I'm just wondering if your DH's were taking a multivitamin in addition to the Fertility Blend?

DH takes Intramax as part of a therapy for metal toxicity. We haven't had him back to have him rechecked, but when he goes off the supplement (even for a few days) his skin goes to hell and it can take weeks to recover.

I don't really want to get into all the deets on his skin.. but he was dx'd with heavy metal toxicity in 2010, we have no legal recourse against the company where he sustained the exposure (we tried).

here's a pic of him holding Reme, you can see the skin on his hands and face.

Dh takes this:

And he takes an additional 200mg Co-Q-10. I'm just wondering if you think it'd be safe to add in something like fertility blend for him or not? I don't want to give him too much... but he's FINALLY started to accept that our issue might be him and not all me.... and I'd rather start him on something sooner rather than later... because I don't want to wait for results longer than I have to. I really wish I could just buy the proprietary blend part of it :(

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
Fertilityblend is such a gentle supplement that I don't think it would hurt at all to add it :).

I think he'd probably benefit from more omegas (high lignan flax oil is especially good for skin conditions), vit D since you live in a northern climate (2000-4000iu/d), and liquid chlorophyll along with other greens including seaweeds like spirulina (good for metal toxicity).

Is he on an organic or mostly organic diet? That might speed the detox process up a bit.

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
ha! Dh has a sensory disorder that has heavy oral and food involvements. While I could certainly feed him organic veggies... he doesn't eat a lot of veggies at all. Poor guy tries.. but I stopped asking him to try more after he threw up a cooked piece of broccoli all over my feet for the second time :( The only 2 veggies he eats on a regular basis are carrots (which I already buy organic) and potatoes (which I don't buy organic, but I could). I often say he eats like a toddler since it's so limited. I'm seriously so sick of eating the same thing over and over that the last two nights I have made him his own dinner.

I have made some calls about therapy for him, but I have been told that the likelihood of success are in the low single digits since it's been going on for so many years. Poor kid had to eat lunch in the gym alone in school because of it.

Would heating the flax oil ruin the benefits? I could find lot of uses for flax oil if I could use it in cooking. I eat ground flax myself, but I don't have a lot of options for sneaking it into his diet.

I've never thought to give him Vitamin D.. I'll get him a pill case and start adding in 5k IU (since that's what I take, and I'm not buying him special :p)

I didn't know that spirulina was good for metal toxicity... I'll have to do some research so he doesn't accuse me of trying to feed him fish food (I feed my fish Spirulina fortified food). Thank you for those tidbits Kelly, I will look into what I can find about the chlorophyll as well.

I'm so afraid to give him new supplements. The last one we tried was ALA... the first week he was ok.. the second week all his normal white skin patches (healed up patches) turned red and got itchy just like the rest of him... he stopped the med (not because we knew it was that, but because he threw a fit and refused to take any of his meds except the intramax). A year later I made him start it again... immediately same issue. All the skin that took 6m+ to come back to normal was gone in 48 hours. Now he's afraid to start anything new :(

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I actually think thats a good looking supplement.
If you want to you could add Baby Asprin (80mg) and Guaifenesin (100mg)?
Also maybe add Blue-Green Algae, Spirulina, Royal Jelly, DIM (Diindolylmethane), Chlorella and Maca.

Wow his poor skin :( I almost cried when I saw the picture!

plan4fate October 13th, 2013 01:54 AM

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I elected to skip the maca for him when we started ttc. He has an extremely high sex drive that I just cannot physically keep up with. I just can't risk that Maca will increase it any higher, he'd literally tear me to shreds :(

I take DIM, didn't know he could. He works heavy construction, and comes home bleeding a lot.. I'm thinking that aspirin might not be a good idea. He spent a week taking Guaifenesin for a cold (it's what I had in the house, since we've used it for TTC before)... I could probably convince him to take it daily. I did notice that his.. um.. stuff, wasn't as thick.... Would he take it full time, or only during O for me?

I'm gonna research the algae's and seaweeds you've both mentioned.

And yes, I love his intramax. It might not be the best tasting thing in the world for him (to be honest, it tastes like Flintstones vitamins... he's just weird). Now that I look at the label.. it looks like they've changed it, it used to have more vitamin C... which probably explains his slow down in healing time...

I'd been wanting to ask about this a while ago.. I probably should have. lol. At least now you've all given me a few nights worth of research :)

Oh Lucy.. his skin is terrible. He itches non stop. Benadryl and melatonin aren't enough to get him a good nights worth of sleep most of the time. We can't use anything with fragrances in the house, he uses organic natural soaps and I make lotion for him 5g buckets at a time (Shea butter, coconut oil, Vitamin E, Olive oil, and Cocobutter) since what we buy in stores are so full of crap, or hidden scents. And it's actually rather mild there in the picture. It's been much much worse, where all he's been able to do is lie in bed in agony, one big seeping wound. That was before my time.. but talking about it brings tears to his ex wife's eyes. Reme was 3.. and didn't understand why Daddy couldn't play or hug him. It's one of the reasons I don't work, because when I'm not rushed and stressed we don't take shortcuts that affect him :(

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
Probably redundant but have you tried plain oatmeal baths? You put plain oatmeal stuffed in a stocking and let it steep in a bath til the water cools to lukewarm, then bathe.
Any kind of heat probably makes it worse. Poor guy :(

I think the supplement you have is pretty thorough. Without getting him tested you won't know for sure. Since his biggest organ is damaged his body is compromised and he will be hyper sensitive to things that he may have been fine with before the exposure.

If you're concerned about recovery rate, you need to look at what's required for basic cell repair and reproduction. Folic acid, B complexes particularly B6 and B12, and probably zinc.

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I wouldn't say if heat makes it worse or not to be honest. Over heated yes.. but not in a tub of hot water. He itches like mad when he's cold, or if he's too hot (think winter or in the heat of summer).

During our active ttc months I tend to make him perform before his bath... a little smellier, but better than swimmers that have been simmering for 2 hours. The baths alone could be what's killing our chances... in that case it'd be straight to IUI I think.. cause while he could give up baths for a few days to give a sample.. he couldn't do it for my entire O. It's not like he's in there because he wants to be, just can't function with out them.

When his skin was worse he could do lukewarm baths. But how it is as thin as a babies , and if the water isn't warmer than body temperature, he turns purple and shivers :( I'm really worried about how he's going to do working up here this winter, since usually he works from Oct to December in Southern Indiana, laid off until March, and then back down there, or over to the Cincinnati area. He's gonna be so cold :(

I will give the oatmeal bath a try though.. I didn't realize you could do it like a tea bag... only time I've ever had an oatmeal bath was for the chicken pox and my mom had a friend grind it up into powder.

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
That mulitvitamin looks great. I agree with all the other ladies, D3, Pine bark, etc....

Have you ever seen the movie - Sick, Fat and Nearly Dead? - It's about a guy with a skin condition (I know it's not the same as the toxicity you are dealing with) but this guy did juice fasting to heal himself and the condition. Would you DH be up for drinking his veggies?

I know it's not the same, but Bolthouse Farms and Naked juices both have a "green juice" that has the spirulina, blue gree algae, wheat grass, barley grass, parsley, chlorella, spinach, garlic and then apples, banana, mango, kiwi and pineapple to make it tasty :) I drink it all the time, because I can't choke down the spirulina pills!

Just a thought, and it would get a good dose of veggies and fruits in him.

Or check out "fruitgrass - Ultra superfood blend" it is a powder pack that has all organic ingredients - wheatgrass, goji, noni juice, yumberry, amla fruit, papaya, sea buchthorn juice, mangosteen, spirulina, chlorella powder...- a woman created this while dealing with cancer. The best price is on their website. I've been taking it for a few weeks leading up to our IVF...in hopes to help my egg quality.

((HUGS)) you are dealing with a lot.

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
Thanks Leah.

With his sensory issues food and drink are so hard for him. Of course it does not help that 35+ years of vomiting up food has certainly put some mental road blocks up as well.

I will look into that powder, but I don't know if he could get past the fact that it's green *sigh*. I'm a super fussy eater, but nowhere near this level. I'm pretty sure if someone told me that if I ate nothing but mushrooms and deer steak I'd 100% get pregnant.. I'd do it.

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I tried to get my DH to take other things along with Fertility Blend but he wouldn't. Fertility Blend and Vitamin D is all he took and his numbers all improved including Morph.

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
My hubby takes Fertility Blend for Men, a multivitamin, and Clomid (25mg/daily). We haven't had a repeat SA since he started them though, so it's hard to tell if they're doing any good for him.

infertilitywhyme November 8th, 2013 11:47 AM

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
Ok so we had our repeat SA today (for our IUI) and the numbers were MUCH BETTER and I wanted to share:

My husband was diagnosed in July 2013 with a low sperm count:

Count: 9 million
Motility: 14%
Morphology: 12%

He began taking Fertility Blend for Men (he's been taking 2 pills daily for the past 3 months) and was prescribed Clomid (he's been taking 25 mg daily for the past 2 months) His count was still the same, but the motility was MUCH BETTER:

Count: 9 million
Motility: 87%
Morphology: 12%

Holy cow! That's an awesome improvement!

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
WOW! that's so awesome!

I could only talk mine into a B complex... if anything his skin seems to be doing better. lol

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I hope you dont mind my lurking, i would actually stay away from Naked. a release happened not too long ago. i believe it was about them actually using gmo non-organic fruit/veg in some drinks. does he have a hard time with smoothies? i have food sensory problems myself and can fully understand how difficult it is on him, but i also know how difficult it is on you! if he can handle a smoothie with his fav fruits you can always try slipping in a veg here or there without telling him until AFTER he drinks it. of course tell him before hand that you want to try a little medical experiment or something. or just tell him that as he sips the smothie to guess whats in it. or something i dont know, thats what my husband does with me. but in other foods too. lol.
currently as it stands, we had a loss back in january. my docs put me on birth control and told me to stay on it for at least 6 months. we are now on month 8 of birth control. they wanted to "relevel" my hormones before taking alternate steps. we are thinking of stopping and ttc again. i was just reading about Vitex, i dont know a lot about it. But you may look into it! and you know, the maca didnt do much for him sex drive wise, you may consider a short term try on it!

plan4fate November 9th, 2013 01:13 AM

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
DH doesn't consume any fruit period. He can drink orange juice, and cranberry blends (100% ones). He can't handle the texture of fruit (gritty, grainy, fibrous, etc). Heck, he doesn't even like the texture of a milkshake....

I just can't risk the maca right now for multiple reasons. He's already "frustrated" because he's too tired... and my sex drive seems to have disappeared yet again to start with. If anyone should be taking it, it's me.. but I've seen warnings against Hashi's people taking it.

We have tried vitex in the form of fertilitea on more than one occasion. Each one earning a bfp, and a subsequent miscarriage. I have considered buying it in drops or pills to make it easier to remember to take, but not until my 2nd December cycle.

ANNND to top it off he's developed a reaction to pre-seed and we have to stop using it... *head desk* Is it 2014 yet?

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
double post...

*Leah* November 9th, 2013 07:25 AM

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
preseed oh no!!! ive used conceive plus...maybe look and see if the ingredients are different?

plan4fate November 9th, 2013 11:46 AM

Re: May I ask about supplements and the hubby.....
I'll do that Leah.

I'm gonna give a probably needless tmi warning:

He noticed last night that for 3-4 weeks... his skin on his testicles was fine.. and then we pulled out the preseed... and now it's red, itchy, and losing skin like crazy. :/ And it happens on a cycle every month.. gets bad during my O, gets better after... even with washing with soap (his special soap) and water right after isn't helping him *sigh*
