Please help! Situation is very detailed to get accurate opinions/advice/help!!
Hi, my name is Ashleigh. The following is my history so you know where I am coming from. I think I may have many factors working against me getting pregnant.
In my family all the women for the last 4 generations have all had their children between the ages of 17 and 21. I decided to wait until I was at least 22 and wanted to have children by the age of 25. Life doesn't go the way you plan though and I am now 28 and have had 7 unsuccessful pregnancies that all except two occurred between 2007 and 2009. Most were miscarried very early on within the first month and some were only considered chemical pregnancies. My twins on the other hand were miscarried at 14 weeks and I did have to have a D&C, it was very devastating for me. On a side note about my twins, I had an ultra sound done looking for cysts and found out I was pregnant with twins instead. All the pregnancy tests actually came up negative including my blood tests, I assume its a reason why I miscarried but when that ultra sound was done it was around 8 weeks and the doctor said they looked healthy as far as he could tell. He was baffled at the negative HCG tests.
I have Poly-cystic ovarian syndrome aka PCOS; and my understanding of this is; when a follicle is forming to release an egg it will not rupture but become fluid filled sacs or polyps inside my ovaries or the egg releases but gets stuck to the outside of my ovary instead of going down the fallopian tube therefore becoming fluid filled sacs/polyps, which may or may not be painful, but I may be wrong. Due to PCOS my periods are extremely erratic, heavy and painful, I also contribute extreme cramps to my previous miscarriages. I can go for months without a period and then have 2 in a month then be regular for a year. So tracking ovulation and fertility is **** near impossible. I did see a fertility specialist back in 2008 who assured me that my tubes were open (performed a dye test), my uterus and eggs were healthy, but due to the PCOS my body did not produce enough progesterone and estrogen to sustain my pregnancies. But there was a ray of hope with pills, I take progesterone and it has made me regular from Aug 2011 thru Feb 2013.
In 2011 I had surgery were they burned 17 cysts off my right ovary and 11 off my left. I am concerned I may be scarred but am unsure. They did confirm at that time that my sexual organs minus the cysts and and slight traces of endemetriosis, were healthy enough for me to have children, yet 2 years later of unprotected sex, yielding no results.
My boyfriend and I have been having unprotected sex for the better part of 3 years with only one chemical pregnancy back in 2010. He has fathered 2 other children with his ex-wife 9 years ago for the youngest which were both given up for adoption. We decided last year to seriously start trying to get pregnant. We both cut down on our bad habits of smoking and drinking but are only able to have sex on occasion because Sex is very painful for me due to the PCOS. I know when I ovulate because it usually hurts a ton. So, now that I have rambled on forever, my questions are as follows:

If you have PCOS how do you cope with it? Do you get a lot of clotting during your period because of your PCOS? Does it hurt during sex for you? How do you get around the pain in order to enjoy sex with your partner? Were you able to get pregnant naturally or did you have to take fertility drugs to get pregnant? What kind? Did you have problems with the fertility drugs making the PCOS worse? Do you know of any home fertility "remedies" or "tricks" instead of drugs? How did you end up being able to track your ovulation? Did you have problems with your HCG levels showing up on pregnancy tests?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions but I have not been getting a lot of answers from my doctor and I find it very embarrassing to talk about. Every time I try she looks at me like I have 3 heads or something. This was brought on by the events of this month...

I started my period on June 26th and it ended on July 2nd. It was my first period since end of March 2013. I tested all through out March/April/May/June hoping to be pregnant but was not. I didn't have symptoms during that time or anything, I just test because of unprotected sex. So, I wasn't expecting my period on June 26th but it did fall into my regular time of the month. We had unprotected sex every day from July 6th through July 20th. Today, I had a burst of blood brownish/red blood that last for a few hours but was quite heavy. I had been feeling all the symptoms of my period last 3-4 days so I thought..."Oh guess I started my period..." But then it stopped cold. I also noticed I could smell some things I don't normally smell over the weekend but today my nose wouldn't stop running. I am not sick, though I feel slightly nauseous and have a headache. I have been falling asleep in the middle of the day all week last week. Do you think that could have been implantation bleeding? I thought I ovulated around July 13th or so. I feel extremely bloated and constipated. But its all so hard to track....

Please tell me what you think about everything! It is very appreciated.
Thank you, Justmommies Community!

I am just lurking here. First of all I would suggest charting your temps to make sure you are indeed ovulating when you think you do. Confirming ovulation using your basal body temperature can give you a better idea of how long your luteal phase (days from ovulation to period) is and whether or not you are having intercourse at the right days. I hope the ladies here can give you more I do not have PCOS. My sister was diagnosed with mild PCOS and is on a low dose of metformin right now, thats the reason I was lurking here. Good luck.

Hi Ashleigh. I figured I would try to get a few of your questions shot. First off let met start off by saying that I have had pcos since i was 16 I became sexually active at the age of 21 and I have never ever have sex hurt due to me having PCOS. That is one symptom that I have really never heard of before. Also may I ask if you struggle with your weight? I have found that by losing weight in the past my periods were regular and less intense and I was able to get pregnant at 22 but I did have a miscarriage at 5 weeks. Me and my boyfriend have been trying for over a year now and we aren't having any luck either. I am not taking any drugs Im just hoping that it happens naturally. I have been able to track my ovulation by using opk strips that I bought at walmart. But it can be tricky since I do skip periods some months. Also I suggest that you get some type of tracker that you can keep track of when you have your periods so that it can tell you what your cycle lengths are and it may help pinpoint when you ovulate. Good luck and babydust to you.

Thanks for replying. Yea, I have had PCOS since I was 13. I started my cycle extremely early. I do struggle with my weight. A few years ago I lost 98lbs for a short period of time (gained it all back in a year.) It didn't make anything better or worse unfortunately. I hold at the same weight for years without loosing or gaining a pound. My doctor said its partly because of the PCOS that I cannot loose weight. I will look at walmart for that tracker and see how it works out for me. Good luck with your baby making as well! :)

Also thanks for the advice of BBT, when is a good time to start doing that?

Well I have PCOS too and also TTC. You mention pain during sex. This is not a symptom of PCOS. You can have vaginal dryness from PCOS and that is quite normal for a lot of women at different points ofyour cycle. I would suggest trying a lubricant like KY and see if that helps with your pain. If not, then speak to your OB because pain is not normal.
You also mentioned that you lost weight and then gained it all back in a year. While you may not have thought the weight loss helped I bet it did more than you know. I also bet gaining it back messed with your cycles too. I know that loosing weight with PCoS is hard but even if you can loose ten lbs it makes a difference to your insides.

Your post sounds so stressed and that is not good either. I would suggest talking to a OB and have them run some tests to see what is happening with you. Blood tests can answer a lot of your questions. Another thing you don't mention is whether you take Metformin or not. Metformin can help with weight loss and can help with ovulation. You asked about tracking ovulation I chose to use BBT and even that does not always work with PCOS. I get a blood test checking my progesterone level every month based on my period to see if I ovulate. I wish you the best of luck and hope my answers help you.
