Is Anal Sex Safe During Pregnancy?

Sex is such a personal topic that women may have a difficult time asking their doctor questions about it, especially if they want to know about specific sexual acts like anal sex.  While not every couple enjoys this, if this is something that you and your partner enjoy, you may wonder if it is safe to have anal sex when you are pregnant.

As far as risks to baby goes, if you are practicing good hygiene and are not at risk for premature labor there is no reason why you can’t have anal sex when you are pregnant.  There are some things you should consider though.  Anal sex may increase your risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease.  If you are not in a monogamous relationship or are not 100 percent sure that your partner does not have an STD or HIV, you should always use a condom.

When you are pregnant you may be more prone to getting hemorrhoids or constipation.  Having anal sex may inflame the anus, causing bleeding or tearing.  If you are already having issues with anal inflammation, bleeding, hemorrhoids, or have any sort of anal pain, you should abstain from anal sex as this will just make things worse.

Hygiene is especially important.  The anus contains bacteria that if introduced into your vagina can cause infection that could be dangerous to you and your baby.  If you have anal sex, your partner should never insert his penis into your vagina once it has been inside the anus unless he has first washed up with soap and water.  If you are using condoms, he should always use a new condom before going from anal to vaginal or oral sex

One final concern about having anal sex, which really applies to sex in general, is having an orgasm.  If you are at risk for preterm labor or have frequent contractions that last longer than an hour after you have had an orgasm, regardless of the type of sexual activity that you have had, you should consult your doctor.  It is normal to have contractions or uterine irritability after an orgasm but this should subside rather quickly.  If you are earlier than 37 weeks pregnant, any prolonged problems with contractions after orgasm should be discussed with your doctor.
